It’s tough for a team that’s 4-0 to claim they are unlucky and snake-bitten, but the Kansas City Chiefs certainly can say that. Injuries have mounted quickly and fiercely, with the offense suffering majorly because of them. First, it was Marquise Brown being lost for the regular season with a shoulder injury. Then, Isiah Pacheco went down with a fractured fibula that will knock him out until later in the year.
This past Sunday, the team witnessed arguably their best player so far this season, Rashee Rice, get his knee taken out by teammate Patrick Mahomes following an interception. The injury looked bad, and Rice had to be carted off with a towel over his face. But despite an ACL tear being the initial fear, it’s becoming increasingly possible that Rice avoided a season-ending injury.
Did Rashee Rice avoid a season-ending injury;
There’s still some ambiguity with what exactly his injury is, but the MRI didn’t confirm an ACL tear, which is great news for Rice. Add to that the optimism that has oozed out of some of his teammates, and it’s apparent that Rice could very well be back this season.
Doctors in tune with sports injuries are beginning to believe he suffered a bone bruise and PCL or PLC sprain. The timeline for that would likely be between three and five weeks.
That would be a major stroke of fortune for the Chiefs. Being down one starting wideout was tough enough, but losing a potential Pro Bowler like Rice could have derailed their whole season.
With the team already 4-0, they can afford to let Rice heal and come back fully healthy when he’s ready. Rice returning in five weeks would put him on track to play against the Denver Broncos in a home game on November 10.
