‘I coached Serena Williams and think there is only one superstar in women’s tennis’
Patrick Mouratoglou has made a bold claim after Coco Gauff beat Aryna Sabalenka to the French Open fina
Former Serena Williams coach Patrick Mouratoglou has claimed that Coco Gauff is the lone megastar of women’s tennis following her sensational victory in the French Open final. She cemented her status as one of America’s most illustrious sports figures by dispatching Aryna Sabalenka to clinch her second Grand Slam singles title. The tenacious 21-year-old had already bagged the US Open crown in 2023.
The Saturday showdown was not without drama as Sabalenka insinuated that her own subpar performance handed victory to Gauff, remarks promptly rebutted by the young champion, before Sabalenka backed down on social media. Mouratoglou’s view that Gauff stands alone as a superstar might spark debate; he’s boldly stated this despite Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek leading the game in recent years.
In an Instagram post, Mouratoglou said: “There is a real difference between being a top player playing incredible tennis and a star. I explained that women’s tennis at the moment lacks superstars. There is one big star in women’s tennis, which is Coco, in terms of aura, which is higher than anyone at the moment.”
“I’m not saying that they will not be in the future. I said that there have been huge superstars in women’s tennis. I’m thinking about Serena, Venus, [Maria] Sharapova.”
