Shakira Drops New Line Isima and Reveals Her Curl Routine—‘I Need to Have Dense Hair’

Shakira’s curls are a major part of her stage presence.
Shakira wanted a hair-care line that focuses on health—but still feels personal, not clinical—so she launched isima.
Ahead, the singer breaks down her relationship with her hair, her hair-care routine, and isima products.
As Shakira’s voice fills a stadium, each lyric is punctuated by mesmerizing movement. As her hips tick, whirl, and sway to the beat, her curls bounce, creating an irresistible flair that amplifies her already larger-than-life persona. And she doesn’t take a single strand for granted.
“I need to have dense hair—it’s part of my personality,” Shakira tells InStyle on a Friday afternoon in May. We’re lounging in a suite at the Edition Hotel in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Although the room is sleek and minimal, Shakira’s energy is anything but understated. As such, the room is bursting with color thanks to ornate florals and the punchy packaging of isima, the megastar’s new hair-care line. She partnered with top beauty experts and scientists to bring her vision to life—a hair-care line that delivers more: more shine, more strength, more length.
“I know what it is to feel that you’ve lost a little bit of your confidence when your hair is not where you want it to be,” she says. “During the times when I had less hair because it was broken, it felt like a part of my power was gone. I feel like Samson and Delilah—remember that story [from the Bible] where Samson felt that his energy, his power, came from his hair, and he cut it, and he lost his strength? I feel a little bit like that.”

For Shakira, hair health is paramount. She keeps heat-styling minimal and has toned down her blonde from platinum to a honey-caramel mix .”I do miss the extreme blonde at times,” she admits. But it was “leaving me like one of those troll dolls—all brittle”. However, she’s also not interested in a super involved curly-hair routine. “When I’m in the shower, it’s five minutes in my life when my kids are not allowed to get in and my assistant is not allowed to be there asking me for things,” she says. “Those five minutes that I have, I want them to count.”
So isima is all about enjoyable efficiency. “It’s important to approach hair comprehensively,” Shakira says. “You cannot make it just look good or feel good. You need to heal it from the inside.”

The Wash Routine
Since Shakira is currently on tour, she washes her hair a few times a week to keep it fresh for her shows. “I shampoo like very often, because I’m doing three, four shows a week,” she says. “Before a show, for example, I make sure that my hair is clean. If I’ve been sweeping the floor with my hair, I’m sure it’s pretty dirty.” Once a week, she reaches for Reset, a clarifying shampoo. “This is a blue shampoo, so it doesn’t take away the color,” she says. The blue allows it to counteract any orange brassiness that can appear in bleached hair over time.
“And it smells gorgeous,” she adds. “I get a beautiful scent in the shower that makes me just close my eyes and, you know, feel transported to another place, and forget about all my troubles.”

“If it’s another regular day when my hair is not that dirty, then I can use the regular Riquísima shampoo and Suavísima conditioner,” she says. “Anyone can use these, really, but if you have porous and dry and damaged hair, these are going to do a lot of good. For example, this conditioner has GluconaBond and ceramides. GlucanaBond is the one factor that repairs those hydrogen and ionic bonds inside the hair shaft.” Plus, it acts as a detangler. “I move my hair in all directions! It gets really tangled, so I wanted to get a conditioner that was really good at detangling, but at the same time is giving nutrients, and repairing the hair from the inside, and also smoothing it from the outside.”

Once a week, she’ll swap out Suavísima for Súperbomba, a peptide mask. “In my business, and in my world, you depend sometimes on flat irons and hair dryers,” she says, “and with too much of that, your hair ends up paying the price.” This mask works in three ways. It utilizes Nanopeptide-3, a gentle retinol-like peptide for scalp health, the GluconaBond bond builder, and a blend of soy and rice proteins to strengthen the hair’s cortex. Additionally, it incorporates FiberSeal, which smooths and seals cuticles damaged by chemical treatments, heat, and environmental stressors.

“I can’t live without Curls Don’t Lie and Delicia,” says Shakira. Curls Don’t Lie is a Curl Cream and Delicia is an oil.
“When I get out of the shower, I apply Curls Don’t Lie, and it’s, I swear to God, the most amazing curl definition product I’ve ever had,” she says. “I’ve tested a thousand of them, and some of them just leave your hair too hard, and they’re not doing anything to repair it, and it’s not shiny enough, or they don’t smell good enough. There’s always something. And this one is just perfection, perfection.”

Next, she applies a few drops of Delicia hair oil, lets it air dry a bit, and then braids her hair while it’s still damp to set her curls. “Depending on how curly or wavy I want my hair, I do more or less braids,” she says. “Sometimes, I just like curls that are tight. I’m proud of them. I embrace them. It’s part of my culture, who I am. And I also sometimes like more of a beachy look, you know, a surfer girl kind of vibe.” For tighter curls, she’ll do four or five braids. For beach waves, she’ll do three. “And I let my hair stay with those braids, like, for three, four hours, and then I undo the braids and I’m ready for the stage.”
She’ll finish off the look with a bit more Delicia. “I put just this on right before I go on stage, because it takes care of my flyaways and frizz,” she says. “It also has heat protection, in case I need to go with the iron for a few of my curls to touch up here and there.”

All In is a leave-in conditioner that moisturizes hair while acting as a heat protectant. “It’s called All In because it has everything you need to give your hair nutrition,” says Shakira. “You don’t have to rinse it, and it also smells great.”

The isima Experience
As a woman of Colombian and Lebanese heritage, Shakira understands the need for hair care that caters to a diverse range of hair textures and types. So far, the brand comprises eight products that can be mixed and matched, allowing anyone to create their perfect routine. “I was the first guinea pig, and then obviously, a big group of women have been testing it as well, and gave us their feedback.” It’s a line that has been carefully crafted over four years. “I went back and forth, back and forth,” she says. “The scientists came to Miami. We all sat at my kitchen table and tried many different formulations.”
Plus, each product smells delightful. “The scent is present, but not invasive. It’s delicate, but at the same time, it makes you feel empowered,” says Shakira. Each product is based around the same scent—a blend of vanilla, fresia, peony, kumquat, and apple blossom—but varies slightly from product to product due to the inclusion of other ingredients. “It makes you feel expensive,” she adds. “It’s just intoxicating. I’ve never had so many compliments from men and women about my smell .

In line with the brand ethos of treating hair from the inside out, Shakira and the isima team put just as much thought into the packaging as they did into the formulation.
“From the moment you take the bottle and you just touch it, it feels good. And the moment you open the pump and use it, you’re not fighting with the bottle to get the product out. And once the product has run out, you open it, and you can get the last scoop,” says Shakira. “It’s like, practical stuff like that. Every single detail has been carefully thought out and steadily throughout the process of the development of these lines.”
Shakira sees isima’s products as her babies. “I’ve participated since the very beginning until the very end, she says. “I saw them grow from the moment they were born as an idea—and there’s more to come.”
